Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a method of skin rejuvenation that uses the body’s natural healing growth factors to stimulate skin renewal. It also corrects wrinkles, fine lines, large pores, uneven texture, and skin laxity. It is also very effective for hair loss.
Platelet-rich plasma is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein. We get it from whole blood and run it through a centrifuge to remove red blood cells. It also has a greater concentration of growth factors than whole blood, and encourages a quick healing response across several specialties, in particular dentistry, orthopedics and dermatology.
Because it is a concentrated source of blood plasma and autologous conditioned plasma, PRP contains several different growth factors and other cytokines that can stimulate healing of soft tissue and joints. It also contains proteins that support cell growth. Main indications in dermatology for PRP are androgenic alopecia, wound healing, and skin rejuvenation. For preparation, we use various protocols, with an underlying principle of concentrating platelets to 3–5 times physiological levels, then injecting this concentrate in the desired tissue area.
